Van Halen is an exceptionally popular metal band whose lead singer in the eighties was controversially changed from David Lee Roth to former Montrose frontman Sammy Hagar. Their song Panama is about an Opel Kadett. One of their albums was deliberately named so the initials for its name would spell out an obscenity. Almost every album went at least gold, with their debut album and 1984 going diamond. Live album Right Here, Right Now went platinum. Best Of-Volume I went triple platinum. Numerous hit singles throughout their career, with the Hagar-era Jump making gold status.

On the animated cartoon series Dexter's Laboratory, there is a segment known as Justice Friends. The character named "Val Hallen" is a cross between Valhalla and Van Halen. He is dubbed "The Viking God of Rock" and rides a rock guitar he calls his "mighty axe".
